If you want a positive recommendation for "country life", then you've come to the right place. Since leaving the big city behind, my husband and I have come to feel like we have landed in paradise. Every morning from spring to fall, we try and make a tour our property to see what is new in the garden, say good morning to the horses and chickens, and just enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of our surroundings. In the spring, every day brings a new splash of color as the lilies, dogwoods and fruit trees burst into bloom. Artistic twists and turns of the branches of the wild cherry trees turn green as they leaf out for another season already laden with fruit that will feed the birds throughout the summer. The vegetable garden is a daily adventure as the seeds planted in February and March start to break through the soil warmed by the spring sun. With summer comes fresh corn, squash and more and dinner is determined by what is ready to harvest that day. In the cool of the evening, a horse back ride through the surrounding countryside is the best way to end the day. And berry picking, both blueberries and wild blackberries, will provide the makings for homemade ice cream and cobblers all through the year. With the first hint of fall, the last of the summer garden is harvested and the winter garden of broccoli, spinach, cabbage and more bring out the gardening tools again, as we plant for a winter and early spring harvest. The beautiful fall colors of the red maple, sweet gum and cherry trees as they get ready for winter remind us as we make our rounds that winter will soon be here. And although we don't get the bone-chilling cold that most of the nation experiences, it does get cold enough that for two or three months, we "take a break" and enjoy the fireplace on cooler winter nights and cuddle up with our four Jack Russells who take on a calm winter personality. We have found that each day brings something new. Whether it is the symphony of turkeys as they call out to each other in the spring, to the deer who seem to know just when it is safe to come out of the woods, we have not once looked back on our former livestyle with regret. If this sounds like the lifestyle for you, contact me and I will be glad to help you achieve your dream! |
